Tomorrow’s list is sitting in front of you. And the same thoughts are circling that circle every week:
“Is my technique actually working? Or am I just doing the same thing every treatment and hoping for a different outcome?”
“What am I going to do next with the tricky ones?”
“Are they really not improving, or can I just not show them that they are?”
“Please don’t let my new patient ask how many treatments it will take.”
“Why does my body ache more than my patients’ do?”
“Maybe they’d be better off seeing someone more experienced…”
And here’s the tell: you think that last one about every patient. Which means it was never really about the patient. There’s nobody at work you can safely ask — not without your boss seeing weakness, not without colleagues judging your hands. So you’re left to work it all out alone. And working it out alone, without the experience to draw on, is close to impossible.
Your degree taught you diagnosis, clinical testing and technique — and stopped there. The skills that make a career sustainable were never on the curriculum: how to build a progressive management plan, how to talk about the treatment journey, how to rebook ethically because there’s a genuine plan behind it, how to use your body so it lasts thirty years of clinic days.
Five years and a serious investment of time and money shouldn’t produce a practitioner who’s floundering by year two. That’s a gap in how our profession trains people. It isn’t a flaw in you.
And rebooking? It only feels like selling when there’s no plan behind it. When every patient leaves with a clear management plan built around their life, rebooking stops being an awkward ask — it’s simply the next step of the care you’ve already mapped out together. Patients first. Always.
I had exactly one boss who supported and uplifted me. That encouragement left a legacy that’s lasted my whole career — and made it painfully clear how rare it was.
I didn’t dare show my weaknesses at work, because I didn’t think I’d get support — just disappointment, and a job suddenly in jeopardy. So I built my own way out: stubbornness, perseverance, and years of trial and error you shouldn’t have to repeat.
Then I spent 14 years as a practice owner teaching those strategies to every associate who came through my doors — new grads through to senior practitioners. Every single one of them, at every level of experience, had areas to refine. Gently challenged, never judged, all of them grew.
Now I mentor the way I wish someone had mentored me: respectful, warm, honest — and entirely outside your workplace, so there is nothing to fear in asking.

"I know what it's like to be newly qualified, capable, and completely on your own — second-guessing your hands, your conversations, your right to be in the room. I built my confidence the slow, unsupported way. I'd rather hand you a shortcut than watch you do it that way too."
- Holly Miles
Osteopath. Educator. Mentor. Technique tutor.
After 14 years of practice ownership, and nearly 20 years of delivering 'hands-on' patient care, I’ve shifted my focus to upskilling and supporting the people who keep healthcare moving — you. Why just fast-track the growth of my own practitioners, when I could be accelerating the effectiveness the whole profession?
The past decade has seen me teach technique and patient diagnostic and management skills at Unitec as a clinical tutor and lecturer. I also served for 4 years as a Osteopathic Council of New Zealand (OCNZ) preceptor for overseas osteopaths completing their CAPP (Capabilities in Practice), and continue to contribute to our governing body on the OCNZ disciplinary board. I created, developed and led the CPD group for our district for 3 years. Still going strong to this day.
For the past 2 years, I've also been contributing to the Osteopathic Society research consultation committee, and am shortly due to deliver my workshop - "Essentials of patient led care: Short, medium and long term osteopathic management" at the annual Australasian osteopathic conference, Sea World Resort, Gold Coast.
As a business owner, building from the ground up with my own clinic, I have a plethora of lived business and patient-based experiences, not gained by completing a course, but by learning hard lessons with real world examples of practice life.
Now, I channel that experience into my mentees, course participants and technique tutorial students.
I’ve been exactly where you are — running the room, juggling patients, managing expectations of bosses, and trying to keep your own osteopathic spark alive. I don’t teach theory. I teach easy, practical tools and strategies developed by me, in the real world. I’ve built them, lived them, delivered them, and supported others through them.
Together, we can make your life as a practitioner easier, more profitable, and more fulfilling. Let's see if we're the right fit to work together.
Every option is practical, personalised and designed to change what happens in your clinic this week — not someday.
